Description of Significance THE CHEROKEE NATIONAL CEMETERY WAS CREATED IN 1857 AND REMAINED UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE CHEROKEE NATION UNTIL 1906, WHEN ITS OWNERSHIP WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE CITY OF FORT GIBSON. THIS TEN-ACRE SITE IS THE FINAL RESTING PLACE FOR SEVERAL PROMINENT CHEROKEES, INCLUDING CHIEF WILLIAM POTTER ROSS, GEORGE O. SANDERS, AND CONNELL ROGERS. LISTED IN NATIONAL REGISTER 3/19/1979.
